Trail Education in Action

FTI’s Trail Academy introduces participants to the fundamentals of sustainable trails and responsible recreation. Through these programs, students and community members learn:

• The importance of maintaining and protecting trails
• Key principles of Leave No Trace
• Trail etiquette for safely sharing trails across user groups

Participants apply these concepts directly in the field. At Fat Man’s Loop, for example, students evaluate sections of trail to identify what is working well, what needs improvement, and where impacts are occurring—building practical understanding of how trails function and how they are sustained.

FTI has also partnered with local organizations, including Gear Girls, to expand access to trail education and introduce more community members to outdoor stewardship.

Reinforcing Stewardship

Beyond events, FTI supports trailhead and on‑trail signage that promotes responsible use. Clear, visible guidance on etiquette and best practices helps reduce user conflicts and protect the environment—extending education to every trail user.

Looking Ahead

FTI is committed to expanding these education efforts to reach a broader audience and deepen community engagement. Future initiatives aim to grow Trail Academy programming, build new partnerships, and enhance on‑trail messaging—ensuring that stewardship, safety, and shared responsibility remain central to Flagstaff’s trail experience.
