Flagstaff Trail Initiative’s (FTI) mission is to build widespread support for a connected, sustainable trail system that serves all users across the Flagstaff region. By working across jurisdictions and partnering with land managers and trail organizations, FTI plays a unique role in aligning efforts and directing resources where they are needed most.
To advance this mission, FTI uses grant writing, business partnerships, and public donations to support trails on public lands throughout the Flagstaff area. Our newest fundraising effort—the Big Pine Trail Fund—is a flexible, general trail fund where every dollar donated goes directly toward trail improvements.
Maintaining the Trails We Love
Trail maintenance protects both users and the land. From erosion repair and drainage work to tread restoration and vegetation management, regular upkeep keeps trails safe, sustainable, and open. Maintenance typically costs $2,000–$8,000 per mile, and timely investment prevents far more expensive repairs in the future.
Building and Improving Trail Connections
Trail construction and major rehabilitation projects expand access, improve connectivity, and better serve the diverse Flagstaff trail community. These projects can include new trail segments, redesigns for sustainability, or upgrading existing routes. Construction and major rehab generally range from $15,000–$50,000 per mile, depending on terrain and complexity.
Investing in Trail Infrastructure
Trail systems depend on strong supporting infrastructure. Trailhead signs, kiosks, maps, and parking improvements enhance safety, reduce resource impacts, and improve the overall user experience. Typical costs include $3,000–$10,000 for trailhead signage and $5,000–$20,000 for small parking or access improvements, with larger projects requiring additional investment.
